Review of business/services; first be advised that DECKSTERS has  the proper insurance and paper work on file at most of the major shipyards and marinas in Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and Palm Beach.  At DECKSTERS we have invested in specialized tools for the express purpose of sanding teak decking.  All of our sanders collect their own dust, this means other work being performed can continue without interference while we sand.  Our sanders also have guards to protect your hull,, house and stainless from sander scratches.  We have over the years developed sanding practices and techniques to make our operation as uninvasive as possible and to leave you with the best finished product.
Over the years of doing teak decking, we have learned that if you are going to make the investment in teak decking, you should start with the best teak available, which is naturally grown Burmese teak.  it is more expensive, because it takes longer to grow, but it wears like iron and lasts three times longer than farm raised teak and will not get the round mildew marks.  However after 5,10,15 years from now you'll still have a beautiful teak deck.  I cannot stress enough that if you are comparing quotes to make sure everyone is using Burmese teak and if another company gets the job that they use Burmese teak.  Visually the differences are subtle, but physically they are vast.  To build a new teak deck, using 1/2" Burmese teak with a 3" border and 1 7/8" planking, making the teak decking thicker does not affect the price significantly, but making the boards wider does.  Of course we would build to your specifications.  Burmese teak is a commodity and the cost does fluctuate, so the square footage price would be locked in at the time of the deposit. Whatever the square footage installed does not include tear off and fairing of the sub deck, which would be billed at $65.00 per man hour, plus materials. As our sanding of teak decking goes, we find that the sun, salt, washing and weather take its toll,  making the teak decking wear away, causing the grain and caulk to get higher and the teak decks stay wet longer, thus making the teak decking wear faster.  DECKSTERS cuts off the caulk that is proud of the deck prior to sanding of the teak decking, the reason is two fold, 1. the caulk is resilient and and harder to sand than the teak deck and 2, by cutting the caulk flush with the teak deck prior to sanding we are not stressing it as hard on the seams.  While it is proud the sanders have a tendency to grab and pull at it causing leaks down the road.  DECKSTERS sands approximately 85-90% of the gray out of the teak deck, leaving the last 10-15%.  These are the deep veins in the teak decking and will clean up when the deck is washed.  It is far more economical not to sand the teak deck down to its lowest point. After we sand the teak decking it is not uncommon to expose hidden leaking seams and these would need to be repaired. Depending on the size of the vessel a certain amount of feet of caulk would be included in the deck sanding and repair quote. We find there is always caulk that needs repairing. Sometimes teak decking requires the repairing of the bungs, other times the teak decking requires re-seaming, which is the process of removing all existing caulk from the teak decking and installing new caulking.  The first step is to determine how much of the teak decking is remaining and when you fall below 1/4" the process will only hold off replacing your teak decking for so long.  DECKSTERS uses saws, routers,. chisels and knives to re-cut the seams down to the sub deck in order to rep[air the teak decking and does it wide enough to give us a clean edge on both planks.  the joints are sanded to ensure a good grip to new caulk.  The grooves are vacuumed and blown out and scraped to remove all debris. then washed with acetone to remove the natural oils from the teak decking.  new caulk is installed and forced into the seam.  DECKSTERS only removes as much caulk per day as we can repair and install that day, if it were to rain on an open deck, it could take up to as much as three weeks to dry out.  After the yacht has dried,  we sand off the proud caulk and look for leaks, any leaks are ckeaned out, taped off and re-caulked and re-sanded.  This is a very labor intensive process and an inexperienced worker can do a lot of damage very quickly, this should be done buy professionals such as DECKSTERS.
